Bad brakes and twisted tea were to blame for one drunken driver's crash in Stafford County this week, authorities said.
The 21-year-old man was heading south on Kellogg Mill Road in South Stafford after work when the vehicle in front of him began to slow down around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, the county sheriff's office said.
When Deputy E.E. West arrived on scene, she saw the man's car in a ditch with damage to its front bumper.
The driver told West he was he tried to slow down, however, his brakes were so bad he could not slow down in time. In order to avoid a crash, he swerved into the ditch, authorities said. The driver had red, glassy eyes, slurred speech, the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, and admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages, authorities said.
The driver was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content between .15 and .2, as well as, improper brakes. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
